3 magi approach Bethlehem

I thought I would try and push the boat out with this one and go for a lighting effect that is outside of my comfort zone. The camels were fun to paint.

Journey to Bethlehem

Nativity card design depicting Joseph and Mary's journey to Bethlehem. This one was quite a challenge - especially working out the lighting.
Done in Painter IX and Photoshop.

Madonna number 3

I just got Painter IX - it's really cool. I used it to loosely block in everything and then refined things in Photoshop. I'm considering doing this one as traditional oil painting too. I tried to go quite classical with the facial features.

Nativity

Another Mary and baby Jesus design. I am really enjoying improving my figure drawing and painting.

Done in photoshop.

Quick sketch

Just a quick sketch done while waiting around in Heathrow.

Yet more Santa shenanigans

I enjoyed drawing all the animals for this one.

Santa the photographer

I think I'm starting to push this style in a fresher direction.
It was quite a challenge to draw all those reindeer legs!

Angelic host

I think seeing a real host of angels would be both terrifying and awesome. Perhaps not as gentle as a commerical christmas card design.

I might work on some personal ideas of how the Christmas scene really looked. I saw the 2006 movie, The Nativity, recently. I think it does a good job of conveying the reality of what happened and how it must have really affected Mary and Joseph as people.

Christmas card designs

The curious case of the phone swing anomaly

If you swing on trees, and the tree is actually a part of a picture in a phone, then I guess this design is for you.

Tech Squad, hold it sister

A birthday card design perhaps.

Fun illustration

Just an illustration sketch I did for fun after reading a children's book. The scene is based on the description of a group of homeless children's living space in an abandoned Venetion theatre.

3 kings (or, in reality, wise men)

This three kings design pairs up with the shepherds one I did before. Perhaps next time I'll do them as wise men to be more biblical. I gave them all a complexion, the middle one more so but I think it would be interesting to paint them as authentic middle-eastern men of their time though I'm not sure how commercial this would be.

Reindeer snow scene

Further experimentation along the digital printmaking theme, this time with images reversed out.

Saturday, 7 November 2009

Christmas card designs aimed at the female market.

Digital collage

Christmas designs focusing on a 'digital collage and cut out' style.

Something a little bit different

I've been experimenting with creating digital images that have the look of being made with traditional print making methods such as lino cut, letterpress, collage etc.

Technology designs

These greeting card designs focus around technology.
For the phone image I was trying to create an elaborate scene, perhaps in the vein of Heath Robinson. It was quite fun thinking up different ways to implement construction tools into the picture.

Nativity designs

These Nativity designs are something a little bit different. I was asked to focus on using larger shapes in the images. So this is what I came up with.

Christmas cards

Here are some recent Christmas card designs I have done. Some have more of a narrative than others but I have always tried to create interesting 'Christmassy' situations.

Birthday Cake

Illustration commission for a girl's birthday card. Its fun to see how much you can jam onto one cake!

The stars and title were foiled on the final card.

More snow

I've resolved that one of the most appealing ways to paint snow is to paint it like it's icecream.

It's Christmas every day!

Here is a Christmas card design I did. The curly beard feels like a homage to the Nightmare before Christmas (only a bit less dark!)

Done (as usual) in Photoshop. I really need to try painter, or better yet get back to some traditional painting!

Christmas Pudding

Christmas is coming, albeit a long way off. So I thought I'd post up this Christmas card design I did. I like the idea of creating odd situations in my own little world:)

Everyone loves Christmas pudding, right?

And one more

Thought I would try zooming out a bit with this composition. I was going for a sense of protection with the cub under the mother's legs.
